Artist statement

Coinciding with its heavy meaning in historical paintings, and its strong connection in Arab culture, I chose to create a body of work that has manifested from fruit. My series ‘Fruit Salad’ discusses topics such as identity, belonging, social challenges and societal issues. All of what stems from the subject of othering, which has been the main theme of my full MA research.

My work started off as portraits, using both paintings and ceramic as my medium. Each piece presents a morphed produce which is a hybrid of three different fruits; what you see is a fruit, yet does not fit in any actual existing category. Which discusses and examines our connection and disconnection between the self and the grasping roots from what we crave; finding a place and to belong. Now slowly developing, With the use of repetition and the idea of still-ness, branching out into something different, I started creating scenes of what can be depicted as expressionist still life paintings. I try to visually capture the uncomfortable inner-struggle that ungrounds us from the ‘situation’ in question in moments of irritation. Leaving us to revise our relationship with each other, our community and society as a whole.
